About Stowe

Vacationing urbanites discovered the majestic mountains, crisp air, rushing streams and invigorating climate of Stowe almost 200 years ago. In 1858 an inn was built atop Mount Mansfield to supplement the 600-room Mansfield House Hotel in the town below. By the early 1900s Swedish families began migrating north; skis were their local transportation. Serious skiing began in 1933 when the Civilian Conservation Corps cut a four-mile trail down the mountain. Brave souls paid 50 cents a day or $5 for a season pass. The eventual Ski Capital of the East (as designated by Ski and Skiing magazines) took off in the 1960s, expanding from A-frame chalets to condo villages. By 2005 there were 65 lodging facilities, ranging from four-star all-season resorts to homey B&Bs. Stowe supports more than 50 restaurants featuring international – and very Vermont – cuisine. Despite its growth, at heart Stowe is still a charming, friendly New England village, an excellent place to live the good, wholesome Vermont life.
