About Waterbury, Vermont

The Waterbury Village is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. It is located on one of the most scenic routes in Vermont and less than 15 miles from 4 major ski areas: Stowe, Sugarbush, Mad River Glen and Bolton Valley.

Some notable community-minded establishments include the Waterbury-Stowe Fish & Game Club, established in 1949 with a mission to preserve natural resources and promote cooperation between landowners and sportsmen, The Children’s Literacy Foundation, The Waterbury-Duxbury Mentoring Program and A River Runs Through It, a garden club providing gardening workshops and community enhancing projects.

Revitalizing Waterbury, Inc. a local non-profit committed to the ongoing renewal of downtown Waterbury, is one of several efforts to preserve and enhance Waterbury. They recently restored the historic Waterbury Railroad Station, originally built in 1875, that lends to the timeless spirit of downtown Waterbury.

The Central Vermont Railroad came to Waterbury in 1849, bringing along significant growth in the areas of tourism and business. Waterbury was named after the hometown of its initial residents, who came from Waterbury, Connecticut. It was chartered in 1763. Population in 2007 was estimated at 5,348.

Vermont products manufacturers and artisans of international repute greatly contribute to Waterbury’s economic growth and success. These include Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, Cold hollow Cider Mill and Ziemke Glassblowing Studio. Four of Waterbury’s main retail businesses have remained in the same family for nearly a hundred years.

Waterbury offers an especially rich environment for recreation, community services and business, for village residents as well as those who favor a more private setting.
